Feeding Your Dog Table Food: A Bad Idea?

If you are debating whether to feed your dog table food as opposed to dog food, you should first consider the pros and cons before making this decision. There are many benefits to feeding your dog table food instead of dog food. The easiness of this type of feeding is one of the most popular reasons why people like to feed their dog table food instead of dog food. Not only is it easier to remember exactly when to feed your dog, but it is also easier to clean up, and you feel like you aren’t wasting any leftover food. Another benefit of doing this instead of using dog food is that it is likely much cheaper. You probably only feed your dog the same amount of food you would have otherwise thrown out, so it doesn’t cost you any more to feed them table food, and you are saving on the cost of dog food. There are negatives to this type of feeding, though. One of the first and foremost things that should be considered when comparing table food to dog food is that your pet may get used to table food, and you may no longer be able to convince them to eat their dog food again. Not only are they offered a variety of flavors that they simply can’t receive through dog food, but the texture is different, and this may be appealing to them. One of the other downsides to using table food as dog food is that it will become increasingly more difficult to sit down and eat without your dog harassing you for food. If they have never tasted table food, their dog food in their bowl will usually be enough. However, if you sit down to eat in the living room or at the table, your dog may be at your feet begging you for something other than dog food.

This also brings up another point, and this is dog health when you give them table food. This is a big concern, particularly if many people will be feeding your dog leftovers or table scraps. When you feed your pet dog food placed in a dish, you are easily able to monitor the amount your dog is eating. This makes it easier to monitor dog health and keep their intake of unhealthy foods at a minimum. This can become very difficult if the dog is given scraps or fed directly from the table, however. Another way this can affect dog health is the type of food they are fed. This can potentially put your dog’s health at risk because there may be someone that doesn’t know the limitations of what animals can eat, and you may even find your dog being fed chocolate, which can be detrimental to dog health. In this case, it is often much easier to monitor dog health and what they eat if everyone knows the dog is only allowed dog food. As you can see, there are many benefits and negatives, both for you and your dog’s health, to feeding your dog from the table. Consider both thoroughly before choosing which method you want to use for feeding your dog.
